The River Walk. The Alamo. All great historical sites in San Antonio, Texas located right in the downtown area. As someone that lived in San Antonio for a while as a kid, I might be a bit biased. But I highly recommend spending two to three nights in the city.

The city doesn’t have its share of luxury hotels that you can find in the Maldives. But there are still plenty of great options to relax after a night of exploring.

Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk

Despite the name, the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk is a bit outside the main section of The Riverwalk and the main sites. The hotel opened for guests back in 2021. It is a nice little place to relax for a few nights while exploring the city.

The hotel features 162 rooms including 33 suites. Rooms are modern with tons of amazing features. There is even a roof top pool with cabanas!

Cash prices are high at the Thompson San Antonio. The average night costs $350. The hotel is a World of Hyatt Category 5 hotel.

Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk

The Canopy by Hilton San Antonio is located in the main area of the Riverwalk near all the restaurants and sites. If you want to see the Alamo, it is just a half mile walk. The hotel isn’t as fancy as other hotels on this list, but it is still an upscale hotel. Rooms are bright and modern with amazing views.

Cash prices can widely vary from $150 to almost $500 a night. A standard rate will set you back 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk

The Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk is nearly right across the street from the Alamo and all the most popular Riverwalk restaurants. In fact, it has an exit right on the Riverwalk! This hotel isn’t as luxurious as the Thompson, but it is still a great upscale property.

This is a Category 3 World of Hyatt hotel. You can use a Category 1-4 Free Night Award if you have one.

The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio

Located on the South Fork of the main Riverwalk section is the Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio. They say the South Fork is the quiet end of the Riverwalk. This is the only Marriott hotel making this list. The hotel is upscale and modern, but with roots in the city’s heritage. Personally, I think the décor at this hotel is the best of the bunch.

If you use cash, expect to pay between $150 and $700 a night. Most cash nights are around $300. Points nights are extremely reasonable between 30,000 and 50,000 points per night. If you have a 35,000 Free Night Award this would be a great hotel to use it at.

Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk

The Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk is connected to the San Antonio Convention Center. This is the perfect hotel for someone attending an event there. The hotel is the least luxurious of all the hotels on the list, but staff here is excellent. It consistently get great reviews.

This is a Category 3 World of Hyatt hotel. You can use a Category 1-4 Free Night Award if you have one.

Cash rates typically start at $300 each night. But expect that to increase if there is an event at the convention center. When that happens, you’ll get some great value out of your points.

How to Earn These Points

Hilton points are easy to earn between three personal and one business card offered from American Express. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card would be the best option. You’d also get Hilton’s top tier Diamond status. You can also transfer American Express Membership Rewards points. For every one Membership Rewards point you transfer, you’ll end up with two Hilton Honors points. We don’t recommend transferring your Membership Rewards to Hilton because Hilton typically requires a ton of points for each night.

Marriott partners with both Chase and American Express for a ton of personal and business credit cards. One of the best Marriott personal cards is the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card. It offers Marriott Platinum status just for holding the card. Platinum status gets free breakfast and room upgrades. You can also transfer both Chase and American Express points to Marriott. Like Hilton, transferring flexible points to Marriott isn’t great value.

World of Hyatt points are a bit hard to earn. But they do partner with Chase for a personal and business credit card. Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to World of Hyatt. This transfer is one of my favorite ways to use Ultimate Rewards points. I love using the Chase Sapphire Reserve for any travel purchases to earn my Ultimate Rewards points.

Best Points Hotels in San Antonio, Texas Bottom Line

While San Antonio doesn’t get the same number of visitors as cities like Austin, but the city has tons to offer. If you have someone in your family that loves history, this is one of the best cities in the state of Texas.

IHG didn’t make this list of best hotels as they don’t have a luxury hotel in the city. There are some extended stay hotels. If luxury hotels aren’t important to you, Marriott, Hilton and World of Hyatt have more hotels in the city. Check cash prices before booking to ensure it makes sense using points.
