After staying at both the Great Scotland Yard and Andaz London Liverpool Street, it was time to continue my tour of London hotels. This time at the Hyatt Regency London Churchill.
The hotel pays homage to Winston Churchill, the former UK Prime Minister. It first opened in 1970 and became a Hyatt hotel back in 2004. The 440 room hotel is popular with business travelers and tourists due to it’s central location in London.
How does this hotel stack up with other London hotels?
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill: Review
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Location
The Hyatt Regency London is centrally located in the Marylebone area of London. The hotel sits on the west side of the tranquil Portman Square. Marble Arch and Bond Street Underground stations are a five minute and ten minute walk respectively away.
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Booking
When booking major chains, always book direct. That is exactly what I did for this hotel booking. Cash prices were extremely expensive, around $600 a night. For my five night stay that would have set me back $3,000! Luckily, I had some Chase points I could transfer to World of Hyatt.
The Hyatt Regency London Churchill is a category 6 World of Hyatt hotel. Standard rooms range from 21,000 for off peak nights to 29,000 for peak nights. During my stay, all nights were priced at the standard rate of 25,000 points. I used 125,000 for my stay.
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Check-In
I arrived a bit after 4PM after leaving the Andaz London. The hotel was extremely busy with tons of other guests checking in. I was informed that my upgraded room was not ready since another Globalist had just checked out, but I could get a base room now or wait in the lounge.
I decided to wait in the lounge. She informed me that the hotel would contact me when my room was ready. 7PM came around and no one contacted me. Down to the front desk I go! Thankfully, my room was ready.
The Room – Regency Suite Balcony
I was assigned room 930, a regency suite balcony room.
As you walk into the suite, you enter the sitting area. Here you find a mini bar, desk and couch. The couch looked a bit weary, but was still pretty comfortable. Across from the couch was a television. You can connect to a Chromecast to stream Netflix or similar. The desk worked great for remote work and the chair was comfortable for long days. The mini bar was stocked! I was provided several bottles of still water a day plus tea and coffee.
The bed and bathroom were off the side of the sitting area. The bedroom was a bit small compared to the sitting area, but still a nice size. The bed was extremely comfy. Probably the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in while traveling. On both sides of the bed was a side table with power outlets and a lap. During turndown service, housekeeping provided additional bottles of water.
The bathroom had everything you needed including a shower, full size bathtub and wardrobe. The bathroom isn’t the most modern, but was fine. My only complaint was the shower. You had to step up into it which made me feel like I was on a pedestal while showering.
A balcony spanned the entire length of the room which you could access from either room. There were two chairs and a small table. The balcony overlooked Portman Square. Trees were filled with leaves so you couldn’t see what was going on in the park. Having a balcony was great during my stay as it wasn’t very hot. I just wish the chairs were more comfortable. I loved having a view of green space in a city.
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Dining
Globalists are offered breakfast at either the lounge or restaurant. I had my breakfast in the restaurant each morning. During breakfast hours, the restaurant is extremely busy. Pretty much every table was full. As one party left another party filled the table.
Breakfast was mostly an intensive buffet, but you could also order eggs. I ordered scrambled eggs and omelets during my stay.
A nice selection of fruit was provided each morning with bananas, apples, oranges, melons and watermelon. You also had a selection of salad items, cheeses and sliced melts like turkey, prosciutto and salmon and salami.
There was a nice selection of cereal including cocoa pebbles and frosted flakes. Lighter options included yogurt and muesli. There was also a bunch of assorted pastries including muffins, croissants, and donuts.
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Amenities
The only amenity I checked out during my stay was the Regency Lounge. While you could get breakfast here, the restaurant was much better. The lounge served snacks throughout the day. In the evening they provided light bites and desserts.
Like the restaurant during breakfast, the lounge got busy in the evening.
Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Bottom Line
Staff can make or break a hotel. Most of my interactions with staff other than housekeeping were negative. Both of my interactions with the front desk were cold. There was no mention of the breakfast hours or other amenities on site and the interaction felt transactional. Breakfast staff were terrible. I was ignored often when trying to order coffee or a hot item. But often noticed others getting better service. Because of this, I cannot recommend this property.
All of that being said, the suite and location is fantastic. If visiting London for the first time, this would be a fantastic location to explore.
