The Great Scotland Yard Hotel is a fine hotel located in the heart of London. The building was used for over 200 years as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police. As you walk in, you feel you are transported back to the 1800s yet it all feels modern. Rooms (and suites) are small yet beautifully designed.

What is the Great Scotland Yard Hotel like?

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Koestler Suite: Review

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Location

The hotel is located in a very central area of London. Down the street from the Theater District. Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square are a short walk away. That being said, this is a very busy area of the city. The hotel does sit off the main road down an alley way past a pub.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Booking

The hotel is very popular with tourists due to its central location. Standard rooms can easily start at over $500 a night year round. This is a category 6 World of Hyatt hotel. Standard rooms range from 21,000 for off-peak nights, 25,000 for standard and 29,000 for peak nights. Like with business travelers, this is a popular hotel to use points at. Availability can go quickly during summer travel.

For my five night stay, I used 125,000 points transferred from Chase. Because rooms were small, I used a suite upgrade award to guarantee the standard suite for the stay.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Check-In

I arrived at around 3:30PM and quickly became confused as to where reception was. It was tucked away to the right as you walked in. After a couple of minutes, I had room keys in hand and headed up to my room.

The Room – Koestler Suite

Rooms in London are generally on the smaller side. That is no different at the Great Scotland Yard. That was a big reason I used a suite upgrade award. Even in the Koestler Suite, my room was small. It could not have been much bigger than a standard room.

I was assigned room 106. The outside of the door had an ornate pattern.

The living room was on the left side of the suite. There was a mini bar with coffee and water. The fridge is underneath the Nespresso machine. Took me a little while to find that out. You pull the keys to access that space. I must have a note on my file asking for lots of water because the fridge was filled with still and sparkling. This space had two different seating areas. One made more for dining. The other more for watching TV.

When you walk straight into the suite, you enter the bedroom area. The hallway leading into the bedroom also contained the wardrobe. The bedroom area was very small. I felt like I was on a cruise ship. The bed was centered in the room. On both sides of the bed was a small table. A television was placed along the right side. Because of this placement, it felt awkward to watch. A small window was directly across from the bed.

Considering the size of the room, the bathroom was quite large. Bigger than the bedroom. Even though this was an old building, the water pressure was fantastic. Water sometimes escaped the shower and entered the main area of the bathroom. There wasn’t a ton of counter space with the dual sinks. But there was enough space for a small toiletry bag on both sides. One thing I thought was odd was the bidet. Sometimes the lid would open randomly. Didn’t matter if I walked by or was laying in bed.

The view from the room wasn’t great. I had the back view of the pub next door and the courtyard of the hotel. This is where a lot of deliveries were. Noise was generally not an issue during the night.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Dining

Breakfast is served at “The Yard”. All items are made to order. No buffet here. The restaurant is small and got pretty busy each morning. Since I am a Globalist, my breakfast was free each morning.

Food was quick to be delivered. One morning, I ordered an omelet. Another morning, I ordered waffles. The final morning, I ordered eggs and toast.

Overall, the food was good, but not spectacular. Staff was not great. I was not proactively offered coffee refills while others were. When I did request coffee, it took a long time to get a refill.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel Koestler Suite Bottom Line

Even though the room was small, it is hard to pass up the location. Staff needs some additional training. I would expect better service from a full service hotel. If you can overlook that issue, you will have a great stay.
