Located along the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik has grown in popularity over the last decade. As of writing, there are no direct flights from the United States. You’ll need to connect through Europe before getting to you final destination of Dubrovnik.

Best Use of Points and Miles to Dubrovnik, Croatia

Air France/KLM Flying Blue

The French airline, Air France, and the Dutch airline (KLM) have a dual loyalty program called Flying Blue. Both airlines are solid no matter the cabin class you choose to fly. Both have connecting flights through Paris or Amsterdam depending on your operating carrier. You also might have the option of flying on Delta or Virgin Atlantic for part of your journey since all are part of the SkyTeam Alliance.  

Air France flies to Paris from these cities.

KLM flies from:

Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing for points flights. One day you might find something for 25,000. The next you might see it for 34,000. But this doesn’t mean you should completely right off the loyalty program. They still have favorable awards to Dubrovnik.

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines is one of my favorite programs to redeem miles to destinations around the world. Unfortunately, the airline is moving more towards a dynamic pricing for their awards. Luckily, if you can be flexible, AA does have a flexible calendar to easily find award space.

AA doesn’t fly anywhere in Croatia. You’ll be connecting on one of AA’s partners, British Airways and Iberia.

AA flies to London or Madrid from the following cities.

British Airways flies to many cities throughout the United States.

If you connect through London, you’ll most likely be connecting to Dubrovnik on British Airways. If through Madrid, it will probably be Iberia.

All Nippon Airways Mileage Club

On the surface, All Nippon Airways (ANA) doesn’t make sense for redemptions as the Japanese airline doesn’t fly to Europe from the United States. If you really wanted to fly ANA, you’d need to connect through Japan on separate tickets. Not something most people want to do.

ANA is a member of the Star Alliance. They partner with some excellent European airlines like Swiss Airlines and Lufthansa.

Because there are a ton of airlines partnering with ANA, you have many options to your final destination. You might connect in Zurich with Swiss, or Munich and Frankfurt on Lufthansa.

ANA does have a favorable region based award chart. Meaning not matter how many times you connect, you’ll still be paying the same amount of points. A downside of ANA is the inability to book one-ways. But you could book a multi-city trip and explore multiple cities to get around that.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific is another Asian airline that you may think of for redemptions to Europe. But Cathay Pacific is exciting for redemptions. Why? They don’t pass on fuel surcharges like British Airways does.

While British Airways might charge $600 in taxes and fees for business class, Cathay Pacific only charges $200 for the same flight.

Cathay Pacific is a member of the oneworld alliance. You won’t be flying Cathay. Instead, you’ll be flying AA, BA and Iberia depending on your routing.

Iberia Avios

I’ve alluded to Iberia a couple times in this article for other redemptions. But the loyalty program also has excellent redemptions.

You’ll notice I only mentioned off peak dates. Iberia prices award depending on the time of year. This webpage is updated yearly with peak dates. There is another small problem with Iberia’s redemptions. Iberia uses a distance-based award chart. The number of points you need will vary based on the total distance of all your flights combined. With those two considerations, I’m only including off-peak dates.

How to Earn These Points and Miles

Flying Blue accepts transfers from American Express, Capital One, Chase, and Citi. Cards earning Ultimate Rewards, Membership Rewards, Thank You Points, and Capital One miles will all be able to help you book Flying Blue awards. My favorite cards for earning these points are the Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express Gold Card, Citi Premier and Capital One Venture X.

AA doesn’t partner with any major flexible currencies. You can transfer from Bilt. But its easier to earn AA miles from their cobranded credit cards from Citi and Barclays. One even comes with an Admirals Club membership.

ANA only partners with one US flexible currency, American Express. Cards like The Platinum Card from American Express can easily earn enough points for a round trip booking for two.

Cathay Pacific miles can sometimes be a bit more difficult to earn. They do partner with American Express, Citi and Capital One. With American Express and Capital One offering some great welcome offers currently, you’ll easily earn enough points for these redemptions. Just don’t forget about 5/24.

Iberia Avios are pretty easy to earn. Iberia partners with Chase and American Express. Capital One is another option if you transfer to British Airways first then to Iberia. Iberia also partners with Chase for a cobranded card. It often offers 100,000 points as its welcome offer.

If you are planning a trip to Dubrovnik, don’t forget about your hotel. There aren’t a ton of major brands, but some are incredibly beautiful!

There are tons of options to get to Dubrovnik with lots of one-stop options. As with all redemptions, availability may not be available with all redemptions. You’ll need to run your searches to make sure space is available. Just because a cash flight is available, doesn’t mean an award flight will be available.
