Best Points Hotels in New York City

Hyatt House New York/Chelsea

Located in the Chelsea neighborhood, the Hyatt House New York/Chelsea is the only extended stay on this list. That also means it doesn’t have a bunch to offer. It does have the standard Hyatt House bar open in the evening and a grab and go market with drinks and snacks. You’ll also get free breakfast. Which could be a great saver for those with families. The hotel is down the block from several different subway stations. The Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building are both within walking distance.

Cash prices for members generally hover around $330 per night. Not cheap for most people. This is a category 5 property so unfortunately you can’t use any Category 1-4 free night award. You could use a Category 1-7 award if you are a Globalist, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead points are a better option. You’ll need 20,000 World of Hyatt points for each night of your stay. You’ll get a choice of 1 King or 2 Queens in the Den Guestroom which does not include a sofa bed.

The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection

The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection is the only Marriott on this list. As the name would suggest, the hotel is down from Time Square, but is located in Midtown. The hotel dates back to 1902 as an apartment building. For places not within walking distance, there are several subway stations nearby. The Algonquin Hotel offers several dining options, a bar and a fitness center.

Cash prices can vary widely from $300 to over $800 a night. On average though, cash prices hover around $700. This is especially true once March rolls around. This is a category 7 property. Points nights will be between 50,000 and 70,000 Bonvoy points per night. Focus on the 50,000 and 60,000 for redemptions here. That shouldn’t be too hard to find. Most nights are at the 60,000 price point. But you could use 50,000 Marriott free night certificates from some Marriott Bonvoy credit cards. The standard room is a 1 Queen.

Two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, the Andaz Wall Street is just steps away from the East River. You’ll also have access to dining and fitness on-site at the Andaz. The Wall Street subway station is located nearby.

Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel

The Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel is also located in the Financial District. The pet friendly hotel (as all Thompson’s are) offers a gym and dining options. It describes itself as a plush hotel. To this author it looks similar to an 1800s hotel with a wooden interior. The rooms are much more modern.

Cash nights will also need to pay a $14 dollar destination fee. This is a category 4 property. You can use your Hyatt free night awards here or 15,000 WOH points. Standard points rooms are 1 King or 2 Doubles.

How to Earn These Points

There are a variety of options to earn these hotel points.

While you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott, you won’t get a great value typically. Your best bet is to get Bonvoy points via welcome bonuses. There are a few co-branded cards from Chase and American Express. The Chase Bonvoy Boundless and Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card are typically the most lucrative points options.

While Hyatt does have one co-branded card, there are multiple other cards to leverage for additional World of Hyatt points. These cards include the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve. The next few cards are marketed as cash back but actually earn Ultimate Rewards points. The entire Ink (Chase business cards) line, the Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited all can help you get additional World of Hyatt points.

Best Points Hotels in New York City Bottom Line

While hotels from the Hilton and IHG didn’t make the list, those hotel brands can absolutely be an option when cash prices are low. I’d recommend the InterContinental’s or Conrad’s. Hyatt’s consistently make this list due to their low points totals required. That’s great except when they aren’t in a location.  As with any points booking, you also need to check your valuation. If cash prices are low, its most likely better to pay cash and use the Chase Pay Yourself Back to offset the cost.
