Thompson Dallas National Suite: Review

Thompson Dallas Entrance

By on September 15, 2021

I’ve previously stayed at the Thompson Dallas. The first was on their opening weekend. I ended up getting locked in my room for a couple of hours when the deadbolt broke. The second time was over Fourth of July weekend. Service has greatly improved between my first two stays. This review will focus on the Thompson Dallas National Suite. For the other amenities, check out the review on my previous stay.

Booking

When I use cash, I normally book directly with the airline or hotel, this time I was using a Hyatt Prive agent. This is like Hyatt’s travel agent and you get special perks while paying the standard room rate. Special perks include early and late check in, room upgrade confirmed on booking, and a property credit. In my cash, I was given a $100 property credit. It can be used at the spa, dining, or parking. If you can charge it to your room, you can use the property credit.

I booked the lowest category room of 1 King which was going for $300/night.

Check-In

Check-in was as smooth as my previous stay. I was thanked for being a World of Hyatt Globalist and my Prive benefits explained. I was informed I had be upgraded to the National Suite, a premium suite at the Thompson Dallas. I was given my keys to my room and off I went.

I was given room 1711 located on the 17th floor. This was located in the middle of the hallway towards the back of the hotel. It was a quiet floor during my stay.

While this room was smaller than the corner suite, I preferred this layout much more.

When you first walk in, there is a half bathroom. The sink was a nice size if one person needed to get ready while the other got ready in the main bathroom. I did think it was a bit strange that the toilet was centered in the room. I could also use some artwork to class up the room.

As you walk further in the room, you enter the living room. The couch was along the wall. There were small tables on both sides of the couch plus a table in the center. Floor to ceiling windows filled the space on the far wall.

There was a piece of furniture separating the living room and the dining room. More on the dining room in a second. The 55-inch TV was the centerpiece. Underneath that was some drawers. To the right of the television were some glasses for drinks. There were several different types of glasses.

Underneath the glasses was the mini bar. There were several different types of hard liquor out with some different equipment to make mixed drinks. There was also the standard illy coffee maker. At the bottom was the fridge. It was stocked with soda, a few beers and wine. I ended up taking a few bottles out to make room for some leftovers and discovered one of the wine bottles was opened. Gross.

There was also a shelf to pull out that had a couple different types of snack options. Prices were expensive so bring your own snacks.

On the other side of the furniture piece, was another 55-inch TV. Some additional drawers were underneath the TV. To the left of the TV are coffee cups and espresso cups.

The focal point of the dining area was the table with seating for 6. I loved this modern table. It had a beautiful stone top with wooden legs. The 6 chair were gray and comfortable. I even joked how I could figure out how to take the table home with me. There was even a quirky light fixture above the table.

Floor to ceiling windows filled the entire dining room with tons of natural light.

The bedroom was separate from the dining room with a sliding door. After being in the room a couple of hours, I noticed that door was broken. The finishings were missing on both sides and the door was actually tilted. It rubbed up against the frame each time you opened and closed it rubbing the paint off the door. I mentioned it to the front desk via text. They offered to move me to a different room, but I declined. I did ask it to be fixed, but no one never came.

The bedroom was a nice size. On the far wall was the bed. There were bedside tables on both sides of the bed. On the side next to the bed there were two power outlets and two USB outlets. Plenty of ways to charge devices. There were little nightlights in the headboard that pulled out. They are perfect to read a book while getting ready to go to bed. On the wall facing the bed was a third 55-inch TV. Beneath that was a dresser with tons of drawers. The bedroom also had floor to ceiling windows covering the entire outside wall.

I really enjoyed the views from this room.

Inside the large bathroom, was one sink. It had plenty of counter space for two people. The mirror was large with vanity lights surrounding it.

To the right of the sink was the walk-in closet. There was plenty of space to hang clothes, store luggage and put a few things in the drawers. There wasn’t a lot of hangers. If you have a lot of clothes, you’ll want to request some additional ones.

To the left of the sink was the walk-in shower. It was a nice size. I really appreciated that the shower controls were when you first walked in, so you didn’t get hit with cold water. The rainfall shower head didn’t have a lot of pressure. I did find the water to take a bit long to heat up. There were full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. While the floor may look slippery, it wasn’t an issue.

Furthest away from the sink was a toilet room. A clear door separated the toilet from the rest of the bathroom. There is a small design flaw. You could tell where people had hit the door handle along the wall.

Dining

I’ve previously highlighted the breakfast experience at Nine at the National in my previous review. I’ll mention a few things. Service was so so on both my mornings. They stated they were busy but there was only one other table occupied. There was only one server though. I never got any refills.

I wanted to share the blueberry sourdough pancake with my mom. It looked completely different on this stay than the previous one. It was supposed to be thick, but this one was flat.

The next morning I ordered the oatmeal. It came with bananas, blueberries, toasted almonds and brown sugar.

I also ordered room service to use up part of my $100 property credit. The food came from the main restaurant. We ordered the salsa and guac along Country Club sandwich and a burger.

Bottom Line

I really preferred this room over the corner suite. The dining room worked really out well for working and I ate lunch and dinner at the table rather than on the couch. Staff issues at the main restaurant Nine at the National where the low point. I would expect this to improve as they hire additional staff.

This continues to be my favorite Hyatt property in Dallas.
