After some delays, the Thompson Dallas first opened its doors in November 2020. The 219-room hotel has modern décor and many amenities on site. Feeling I needed a quick get away, I was happy to see there was plenty of availability for base rooms and a secret hope for an upgrade.
Location
Thompson Dallas is located in downtown Dallas off Akard Street in the renovated National Building. The building is mixed use with stores occupying the street level space. The hotel entrance is located on ground level and is easily spotted. The rooms are located on floors 3-20. The remaining floors are luxury apartments.
There are many different restaurant types within walking distance.
Booking
I booked this last minute directly through Hyatt using the military rate. (I am a veteran)
Prices can sometimes be high depending on day and holiday and you might want to use points. This is a category 6 property. Standard rooms cost 25,000 World of Hyatt points. Off peak and peak pricing cost 21,00 and 29,000 respectively. If you prefer a suite, they start at 36,000 depending on a the suite, and off/standard/peak pricing. You can now book suites directly online using your World of Hyatt points.
Hyatt only partners with one flexible currency – Chase. You can also earn additional WOH points from the Chase World of Hyatt credit card.
Check-In
I dropped my car with valet. The valet was a bit busy, but I was quickly taken care of. Multiple people asked if I needed help with my bags.
The check-in desk is down a hallway lined with shelves filled with trinkets and places to sit. When the gallery near the entrance is having events, this area is filled with people.
Check-in was quick and efficient. The woman that helped me was wonderful. She explained all the amenities. I was happy to hear I was upgraded to a corner suite even on a holiday weekend and proactively given late checkout of 4PM. The upgrade was courtesy of my Hyatt Globalist status. I was given my keys and escorted to the elevators. For safety reasons, you’ll need to use your keys to gain access.
The Room
My corner suite was located on the 17th floor right near the elevator. I never noticed any noise issue from this during my stay.
When you first walk in, there is a place to drop you keys or other small items. Walk in a bit and you’ll find the mini bar. There’s a couple of hard liquor items, food and drink options. Prices were high and you’ll be better off bringing something or heading to the CVS across the street.
Go in further and you’ll be in the spacious living room. There’s a couch and a chair to sit in. I didn’t find the chair nor the couch comfortable. Across from the couch was the television. There is some storage underneath the TV. To the left of the TV, there is a small desk. The illy coffee maker was located on the desk.
The bedroom and bathroom were located in a separate area.
You’ll go through a doorway and see a floor length mirror and small couch. Next to the mirror is a wardrobe to hang your clothes. The safe is also located here. Its big enough to hold a 15-inch laptop.
The bathroom also has a door for privacy. On the left is the sink. There’s plenty of counter space for two people. The toilet is to the right of the sink. It located in its own room with a clear door. Across from the toilet room was the shower. It had a rainfall shower head. Pressure was excellent and water was hot. You can turn the shower on without getting wet.
At the end of the bathroom was a large soaking tub. There were blackout shades for privacy end covering the floor to ceiling windows. Because of the location of the tub, they were difficult to access.
Although the bathroom was narrow, it easily maximized its space.
The bedroom was also located in its own room. The TV is on the wall when you walk in. Underneath it is another wardrobe. The bed is placed in the center of the room. Bedside tables flank it. Both had two USB plugs and outlets. There are small lights in the headboard for reading. On the far side of the room was another couch.
The views throughout the corner suite were nice.
Dining
There are several different restaurants at the Thompson Dallas.
The main restaurant is Nine at the National. They serve breakfast and lunch. There is an indoor and outdoor dining section. The outdoor section has views of the pool. The menu is small but what we ordered was delicious. I ordered the blueberry pancake, and my aunt ordered the eggs. If you are staying in multiple days, you might get a bit bored. Staff was excellent.
Globalists can take their free breakfast at Nine at the National or in-room.
Catbird and Monarch are the other options. I never made it to these as they are very pricy.
Amenities
There is a spa located within the hotel. I was needing a message and scheduled a 25-minute session. Prices are high starting at $110. I didn’t take any pictures inside, but you have access to infrared sauna, stream room, hot plunge pool and cold plunge pool.
A meeting space located next to the spa treatment rooms. As luck would have it for me, a large group had it rented out. They were so loud you could hear it through the wall. If you’re planning a treatment, I suggest calling ahead to see if the space is rented out.
There is a large gym with plenty of weights, bikes, treadmills and row machines. If you love Peloton, you’ll be happy in this gym. There were two bikes available. My favorite machine was the kick boxing one.
The pool is located on the roof. There’s a couple of different seating areas for group of different sizes. The pool gets busy beginning at 10am and thins out again around 6-7pm. There are four small cabanas and one large cabana located right at the pool. I did inquire about the cost. I was told it was going for $1,000 for the full day. There is a bar located pool side.
All of the amenities are located on the 9th floor.
Bottom Line
The Thompson Dallas is a great option for travelers that want to stay in downtown Dallas. One negative is the street noise. Dallas currently has street racing issues and I often heard them going by overnight. If noise isn’t an issue for you, this is a wonderful place for anyone looking for a staycation in Dallas or visitors. I’ll happily be returning.
