The Park Hyatt Auckland is a 195-room hotel located along the banks of the Auckland Harbour. It first opened in 2020 after being delayed slightly due to COVID-19. Maritime elements and artwork from local artists can be found throughout the hotel.
After nearly three years of waiting, I finally had the chance to stay at the Park Hyatt Auckland. Did it live up to the hype?
Park Hyatt Auckland 1 King Bed Harbour View with Balcony: Review
Park Hyatt Auckland Location
The Park Hyatt Auckland is located in the Wynyard Quarter of Auckland Harbor. It conveniently located for those planning a cruise out of Auckland or with business in the Central Business District.
It wasn’t near a ton of tourist sites. You’ll either need to Uber or drive everywhere. Even with that, I enjoyed morning walks around the Harbor.
Park Hyatt Auckland Booking
I booked this pretty last minute. Because of expected weather, I modified my flight and was off to Auckland. Wanting to take advantage of my Globalist status, I booked directly with Hyatt.
I planned ten days at the Park Hyatt Auckland using a combination of cash, points and a free night award. The first two nights were on cash. Cash rates were okay. Those two nights were just over $400. The next seven nights were on points. This is a category 5 World of Hyatt hotel. You need between 17,000 and 23,000 points per night. During my stay, each night cost 20,000 points. The final night I used a Category 1-7 Free Night Award.
I ended up needing to add an additional three nights due to a cyclone. Those were very expensive at almost $500 a night. Though I was able to get these reimbursed due to trip delay coverage from the Chase Sapphire Reserve and an annual travel insurance plan.
Park Hyatt Auckland Check-In
After landing in Auckland, I grabbed an Uber and headed to the hotel. I was greeted by a bell hop who helped me with my luggage. I got distracted walking in by the gorgeous lobby. The wall art was perfect for this space.
A front desk agent was ready to assist me. Fully prepared to wait several hours for my room to be ready, I was shocked to hear that my room was ready.
She explained the hotel amenities and where I could get my free Globalist breakfast. Then my keys were given to a bell hop and I was escorted to my room. Maybe it’s just me as an independent woman, but I always find being escorted to my room odd.
It’s worth mentioning the house pup, Beau. Beau greeted me as I walked into the hotel. I was told that wasn’t normal and he normally chills in his bed. As a dog lover, it was a nice start to my stay.
The Room – 1 King Bed Harbour View with Balcony
For the first three nights, I stayed in a 1 King Bed Harbour View with Balcony even though I booked a standard 1 King. I received this as an upgrade due to my Hyatt Globalist status. This is the same room layout as a standard room, but with a view of the Harbour.
I was given room 412. I thought the room was pretty narrow, but the layout was nice. The room was beautiful. I loved the accent colors. Although they were different, it help make the room welcoming.
The mini bar could be found right as you walked in. There was nothing on the countertop which I liked so I could leave my groceries here. The fridge was stocked with water, wine, beer and a few options for mixers. There were also some food options including popcorn, chips and candy. Prices were expensive. Instead, go to the supermarket down the street to save some money.
I originally thought this was an additional toilet. But there was not one in the larger area of the bathroom. I found this a bit odd. They could have probably swapped this with the wardrobe.
Past the toilet was the large walk-in wardrobe. They was plenty of space for two people traveling together. Sometimes I find that hotels don’t provide alot of hangers, but that wasn’t the case here. There were plenty of hangers were available. The in-room safe was also located here. It was big enough for my 15-inch laptop.
Across from the wardrobe was the king-sized bed. It was super comfortable. I got great sleep throughout my stay. Both sides of the bed had tables. Power was easily available to charge your devices. Both outlets and USB ports were available. One bar of chocolate was provided. It was not replenished during my stay.
Further along in the room was the bathroom. This is where you will find the shower and tub. The shower was located along the right. It was a massive walk-in shower. The tub was on the far side. In between the shower and tub was dual sinks, perfect for people traveling together. Counter space was lacking though. Water pressure was fantastic from the rainfall shower head. I loved that the water was basically boiling the moment you turned the water on.
Past the bathroom was a sitting area. You could tell this area took cues from nautical items. The sofa wasn’t great to nap on, but it worked well as a workspace or table to eat from. Across from the table was the only television in the room. I found this to be odd at first. It was difficult to watch the television from the bed. Only after the first night, I discovered that the television was on an articulating arm. You could reposition as needed.
At the far end of the room was the balcony. The space was large, but I thought it was lacking. Although you are provided a small table and two chairs, it could have been better. Loungers would have been better. You also have controls for sunshades. I typically kept this open. It was summer in New Zealand during my visit. A nice break from the cold and snow in Ohio.
Daily turndown service was provided. In-room bottles of water were free and replenished daily. I declined turndown service a few times and staff still pushed the free bottles of water on me.
Dining
Onemata
Onemata is the main hotel restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served daily here. For Globalists, this is where that benefit is provided. I loved this space. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I didn’t notice a ton of people eating breakfast outside. Not sure if that was by design or if no one asked to be seated there.
Globalists can order off the menu and have access to the continental buffet.
There were a couple different stations to the buffet that consisted of cold cuts, breads, fruits and cereal. Breads were provided by a small business near the hotel. The fruits were amazing. Hard boiled eggs, cheese, yogurt, cold cuts were located in a large fridge. Salmon was even available. There were also a couple different specialty juices.
I ordered a couple different dishes off the menu. My favorite was the Hearth Oven Pancakes.
The restaurant did get busy at 7:30AM each morning. Plan ahead if you have a schedule. It is also worth mentioning the staff. They were excellent. I enjoyed getting to know the different employees of the restaurant during my stay.
Living Room
The Living Room serves lunch, dinner and drinks. It’s spread out over a large portion of the lobby floor. Different types of seating arrangements were available to accommodate parties of different sizes. You could sit indoor or outdoor.
I ordered dinner here a couple of nights during the cyclone. I didn’t find the food that great.
I found staff here to be bad. I ordered a drink. After waiting 45 minutes, it never came. I don’t necessarily fault them as they aren’t the ones making the drinks, but they didn’t notice it never came.
The Pantry
The Pantry is a causal dining café. It served breakfast, lunch and dinner. It had your typical sandwiches, burgers, and salads. There were tons of seating here. I never ate here, but I saw many people eating at here.
Captain’s Bar
The house bar is Captain’s Bar. This place was packed every evening. I saw people heading here for drinks then walking over to Onemata for dinner.
Amenities
Fitness Center
The Fitness Center is available 24/7. It nicely done. There were several bikes, treadmills and ellipticals. There was even a rowing machine! If weights are more your style, there is a small selection of free weights. I never saw this place busy. Although, I was going at 6AM. I guess no one wanted to wake up early for their sweat session.
Pool
The outdoor pool was located on the third floor. The outdoor space wasn’t much. Only a few loungers were set up during my stay. The pool isn’t very deep at only four feet. It would not work well for someone hoping to get some laps in.
The Spa
A luxury spa is also available on property. The spa is also home to a hydrotherapy space. It includes a cold plunge, hot tub, dry sauna and sauna. All guests at the Park Hyatt Auckland have access. I loved the hydrotherapy space. It was a great place to relax after exploring each day. I wasn’t able to grab any photos here as no phones were allowed in this area.
Bottom Line
While the Park Hyatt Auckland is the only Hyatt hotel in Auckland, this is definitely a fantastic place to say. Every staff member I interacted with was lovely and helpful. It was great watching the sunrise or sunset from the balcony. You want a view of the water here.
