After spending a day at my favorite hotel in Sydney, it was time to head to another hotel. As much as I love the Park Hyatt Sydney, the cash and points price is high. Luckily for me, there is another Hyatt hotel in Sydney. That hotel is the Hyatt Regency Sydney.
The hotel is massive with 888 guest rooms with 28 suites. That is a small amount of suites for a hotel with this many rooms. Only one room is classified as a standard suite. If the extra space is important, I would recommend confirming into a suite in advance.
This hotel has a different vibe than the luxury Park Hyatt but is still excellent for business and vacation travelers alike. For the three nights of my stay, I enjoyed every moment.
Hyatt Regency Sydney Harbour View Balcony Suite: Review
Location
The Hyatt Regency Sydney is located along the Darling Harbour in the Central Business District. For business travelers, this is an excellent location to be in. The Town Hall Train Station is less than a half a mile away. Hyde Park is also nearby.
Booking
I booked my three night stay directly with Hyatt. Rates were reasonable at $203 a night. I waffled a bit about using cash or points. Ultimately, I decided to use points. I was sitting on a ton of World of Hyatt points.
After booking, I called the My Hyatt Concierge and applied a one of my Suite Upgrade Awards. This is Hyatt Milestone Award. You get two after staying fifty nights and another two at sixty nights.
Check-In
I arrived at 2PM. This was about an hour prior to the standard check-in time. I had received a notification from the Hyatt app that my room was ready at 10AM. A friendly rep helped get me checked in. He explained the current offerings for the hotel for dining options.
A couple minutes later, I had my room keys in hand and off to my room I went.
The Room
After getting off the elevator, a headed down the hallway. It was boring. A little art could help spruce it up. I was given room 1402.
Even though the room is called a suite, it was all one room. No separate areas. I’m not a fan when hotels call rooms like this suites.
When you first walk into the room, you’ll find the wardrobe and mini bar. There weren’t a ton of hangers available. The in-room safe and a hair dryer were also located here.
For the mini bar, a Nespresso machine was included. I really don’t like these. I prefer a normal drip coffee. If you like tea, several types were provided along with an electric tea kettle. In the fridge, was a few drinks.
After going down a short hallway, you enter the main portion of the room. In this area, you have the bed, sitting area, and a table for two.
This could technically be a connecting room. I am not a fan of rooms like this. In my experience, the noise from people next door is louder. I do see the convivence for those traveling with families. If you aren’t using the connecting room, always double check that the connecting room door is locked.
The sitting area was closest to front door. It included a sitting chair with ottoman and a couch. Because of the location of the television, it would be hard to watch television.
The bed was placed on the interior wall. Two small bedside tables flanked the bed. There were several plugs on both sides of the bed. Two USB ports and a power plug. A large mirror was installed above the bed. This helped make the room feel larger.
Along the far wall, a small table for two was placed in the room. This would be great for two people eating a meal together in room. Two bottles of still water with cups were available. I worked several mornings at this table. The chairs were comfortable.
Since this was a Harbour View Balcony Suite, a nice size balcony was included. The balcony was as long as the room. You could almost call it a wrap around. When you first enter the balcony, two small chairs and a table were available. I thought both of these were pretty cheap. Almost like someone went down to the local supermarket and gapped the first thing they saw. This is one area of improvement. The part of the balcony that extended down the room wasn’t that wide. A single person could walk down it.
I was super excited about securing this room with a suite upgrade award. Since it was their fall when I arrived, I wanted to work outside. It rained nearly the entire time I was there dashing those plans.
Floor to ceiling windows lined the exterior wall. A light curtain and darkening shade covered the entire wall. This room faced West getting the sunset, but rooms facing the East would appreciate the darkening shade.
The bathroom was huge. It was split into two portions. The first was when you first walked in. This was the area a large soaking tub was located. Missing were some bath salts or some bubble bath. Even a small portion would have been appreciated. A floor length mirror was hanging to the left of the tub.
The main portion of the bathroom is found to the left when you entered. On the left side, where two robes. They felt kind of scratchy. On the right were two sinks. There was tons of counter space if you need it. A massive mirror hung above the sinks. The shower was on the far wall. Water pressure and temperature were excellent. One thing that was strange was the drainage. A couple hours after showering, I walked into the bathroom and water was near the sinks.
Dining
Breakfast was provided in the main restaurant, Sailmaker. It was only open for breakfast. This place is massive! They serve a buffet style breakfast. I’m not normally a fan of buffet. This one made me rethink my opinion.
First let’s talk about the seating area. The restaurant could probably sit a hundred people. Both mornings, I arrived about thirty minutes after they open. Within twenty minutes, the place was packed. Even with that, servers were attentive. Used dishes were cleared nearly the moment I finished. I always had a full cup of coffee.
Breakfast was served in two places. One for the continental breakfast. The other the full breakfast.
The continental breakfast area was two different stations. The main part was fruits, meats and cheese. You could also get a salad. I think that’s an odd breakfast item, but some people probably enjoy it.
For those following a gluten-free lifestyle, the other station had some items.
There were tons of items offered for the full breakfast. A made-to-order omelette bar was my favorite. They were tons of toppings: spinach, mushrooms, ham, tomatoes, green onions, yellow onions and bacon. You added any toppings to a bowl and hand that to the chefs. A couple of minutes later, you have an omelette. They were great about juggling all the guest requests.
Other hot options were pork sausages, maple glazed bacon and scrambled eggs. I like crispy bacon. The bacon was exactly how I liked it. Normally scrambled eggs on a buffet are runny. These were perfect. The pancakes were awesome. You could also get hash browns, but these were soft.
An assortment of pastries with butter and jams were available. I didn’t partake in these so I could enjoy all the other options.
Jackalberry
Jackalberry is the lobby lounge. It is supposed to offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was closed during my stay. It is focus is drinks.
Zephyr
Zephyr is the rooftop bar. Since it was raining during my entire stay, I never made it up there. They mostly offer drinks but do offer some light bites.
Amenities
The hotel also has a fitness center. It has weights and different cardio machines. I wish I could tell you more, but I was informed it was closed.
Since this hotel is target at business travelers, that was the extent of on-site amenities.
Hyatt Regency Sydney Harbour View Balcony Suite Bottom Line
The breakfast buffet at the Hyatt Regency Sydney made me rethink my opinions on breakfast buffets. Honestly, it was awesome, and I ate way too much during both of my breakfasts. I was bummed that I couldn’t enjoy it the final morning.
This will be my go-to hotel while I’m in Sydney. While I love the Park Hyatt Sydney, it’s just way too expensive. I already have it booked for next year while I’m on my way to New Zealand. Every staff member I interacted with was excellent.
Despite being a “suite”, the room was great. It was clean. The bed was comfy. The bathroom was great. Overall, the room was great. Hyatt Regency’s are quickly becoming my go too Hyatt brand.
