After leaving Ventana Big Sur, I headed back up north towards San Francisco. With another night before my flight home, I decided to check out Monterey, California. There are a couple of different Hyatt properties nearby, but the Hyatt Regency Monterey was the closest to the city. I didn’t spend a lot of time at the hotel so this review will focus on the room.
Location
The Hyatt Regency Monterey is located away from the big tourist sites in the city. It’s a quiet get away as the hotel sits on the Del Monte Golf Course. It’s easy to get to the hotel as its right off of Highway 1.
Booking
I booked this directly through the Hyatt website. I decided to pay cash as rates were pretty low at $180 for my one-night stay. The HR Monterey is a Category 4 property, so you’ll be able to use your annual free night certificate from the World of Hyatt credit card.
If you decide to use points, it will cost you 15,000 for a standard night. You can transfer Ultimate Rewards points from Chase if you need additional WOH points.
Check-In
I arrived well before check-in at 3pm. Luckily, my room was ready. I originally booked 2 queens and was proactively upgraded to a room with a view. I inquired about being upgraded to the Monterey Suite since it was available in the Hyatt app.
That suite wasn’t ready, but the front desk would call me when it was ready. I got a pizza recommendation and left. I received a call less than an hour later my room was ready.
The Room
The property is spread out into individual buildings. You can park right in front of your building. My room was on the back side in the middle along the Del Monte Golf Course.
When you first walk in, there is a half bath with a toilet and sink.
Continue in and you enter in the living room. On the left is a couch. Across from that is the television. Underneath the TV is a coffee selection, safe and mini fridge. There was nothing inside the fridge. The safe is big enough for a 15-inch laptop. On the far side of the room is a desk with a lamp.
The lamp was plugged into an outlet near the TV crossing the door for a connecting room. The was an outlet right next to the desk and worked perfectly. I’m not really sure why the lamp was plugged in like this.
Also in the living room was another small chair. There was a sliding glass door to the patio. The start of one of the holes was located nearby. I’m not sure where the golf balls were hit from, but I heard several balls hitting the façade of my building. Be careful if sitting outside.
The bedroom is in a separate room with double sliding doors. There are two bedside tables flanking the bed. A bench is at the foot of the bed. An open wardrobe is located in the bedroom for hanging clothes. Opposite of the bed was another TV. Another patio is located outside of the bedroom.
The full bath was small. Like really small. You can touch the sink from the toilet. There is hardly any counter space which might prove problematic for multiple people staying in the suite. The shower was a good size for a walk in. The bench is cool.
Bottom Line
The Hyatt Regency Monterey was recently renovated. I didn’t particularly care for the décor but it was nice. Noise was an issue from inside the building. I could easily hear people walking in the hallway and steps from my upstairs neighbor were loud. Those easily awoken at night might have issues. Even with that, this is a decent option as home base for families checking out the Monterey Peninsula.
