After landing from Dallas and going through immigration, all I wanted was to take a shower and stretch out my legs. I took the train from the airport to the nearest metro stop and walked the remaining distance to the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam.
The Hyatt Regency Amsterdam has 211 rooms across five floors. While this is a business hotel, tourists will find the rooms modern, spacious with a touch of greenery throughout.
Hyatt Regency Amsterdam 1 King Bed with Club Access Review
Location
The Hyatt Regency Amsterdam is located in the Roeterseiland area near the University of Amsterdam. It’s near the Tropenmuseum, zoo and botanical gardens.
Personally, I found the location to be a bit off. It was a bit further from most of the sites I wanted to see when compared to other hotels in Amsterdam. I ended up taking a taxi to the Andaz and the driver disagreed with me strongly.
Booking
There are two Hyatt’s in Amsterdam, the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam and the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht. Both looked pretty good from the images. I ended up deciding to start my stay in Amsterdam at the Hyatt Regency for two nights then finishing up at the Andaz.
The Hyatt Regency was booked directly through Hyatt’s website. I did check cash prices. They were around $250 dollar a night. I wanted to save a bit of money, so I ended up using points.
At the time of booking, the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam was a Category 5 hotel. As luck would have it, the day after I checked out was the changes to the Hyatt categories. It is now a Category 4 hotel.

Check-In
Upon walking into the hotel, I was taken aback by the beauty of the lobby. The greenery was well integrated into the hotel. Honestly, I’d say this is the most beautiful lobby I’ve experienced.
There was no one else checking in when I arrived around noon. I was quickly helped by an associate. Although I was early, my room was ready. That has typically been my experience when traveling internationally. The only time I needed to wait was at the Park Hyatt Zurich.
I was upgraded twice prior to arrive. The first time was to a 1 King Bed with Canal View. Prior to arrival, I was upgraded to a 1 King Bed with Club Access. I did inquire about a suite upgrade and told none were available. The app did show an Executive Suite was available as a standard suite. I didn’t press the issue though.
The associate shared a breakdown of the amenities and hotel layout. After a couple of minutes, I had keys in hand and headed to my room.
The Room: 1 King Bed with Club Access
I was assigned room 549. It was located on the top floor at the end of the hallway. There was tons of artwork to admire on my way to the room. It was quiet and never heard a peep from anyone.
On first impression, the room had a ton of character. I appreciated the layout and the slanted ceilings. It was really doing for me that day.
The bathroom was located on the left when you first walk in. The mirror has a built-in clock. It was off by about five minutes. The sink area was large enough. If you pack heavy, it might be difficult to accommodate two people and their stuff on the counter. The toilet was in its own closet on the back left. The shower was on the back right. I’ve typically found water pressure from rainfall shower heads pretty low. But that wasn’t the case at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam. The water heated up quickly as well.
The mini bar was just past the bathroom on the right. There was a Nespresso machine. These aren’t my favorite coffee machines. I typically hate the taste of the little pods. There was a mini-fridge that typically contains normal mini-bar items like drinks and snacks. I was told at check-in that items were removed due to COVID.
During check-in, the front desk associate told me the mini-bar items were complementary due to my room type. Later that night, I called down my first evening to order some water, a protein bar, and a chocolate bar. Those charges appeared on my bill later that evening. I mentioned it at check-out, and they were removed without question.
Moving further into the room was the television, desk, and wardrobe. The television was located in front of a window on a small table. The table had drawers that could be used to put away clothing items.
Next to the television is the desk. It was more of a writing desk. A lamp was placed on the desk. There was a small triangle shaped window behind the desk. A blackout curtain was permanently affixed in the space, but you could move the desk and unzip it if you wanted.
On both sides of the bed, were side tables. Both had power outlets and USB plugs. A chair, small side table and ottoman. The space between the bed and window was small. The chair often got into the way of curtains from closing completely.
A wardrobe was located across from the chair. Several hangers were provided to hang up clothes. If you needed to iron clothes, an ironing board and iron were provided. The safe was inside the wardrobe. It was on the small side. My 16-inch laptop barely fit inside.
Housekeeping was provided every two nights or when requested. I never had my room serviced since I was only staying two nights. I didn’t see the point for such a short stay.
Dining
Globalist breakfast is typically located in the Regency Lounge. It was closed during my stay. Instead, breakfast was provided in the restaurant, Mama Makan Restaurant.
Mama Makan is inspired by Indonesia flavor. For breakfast, I didn’t see that come through. Breakfast was buffet style, but you could order a made to order eggs.
The buffet consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, chicken sausage, baked beans, and pancakes. Several different types of pastries were provided like muffins and croissants. If you prefer cereal or yogurt, there was an entire section of the buffet dedicated to it. A few cut fruits and meats were also available.
Service was inconsistent. On my first visit, I waited about five minutes to be seated even though it wasn’t busy. Several of the servers noticed me during that time. When I finally was seated, I wasn’t told breakfast was a buffet nor asked if I wanted coffee or tea. I wanted to order an omelette so I waited about ten minutes to see if a server would ask. I finally asked to order about halfway through my meal.
On my second morning, I was quickly sat and asked if I wanted to order eggs or coffee. A much different experience than the first morning.
You could also have dinner at Mama Makan Restaurant, but I never did. This is also the food provided for in-room dining.
Amenities
Gym and Spa
There is gym and spa located on site. I went to the gym several time during my stay. There were always several people inside working out. The gym was stocked with ellipticals, treadmills and weight machines. There is also a sauna to use.
Regency Lounge
Normally Globalists and those using Club Access certificates have access to the Regency Lounge. At check-in, I was informed that it was currently closed due to renovations. Breakfast was provided at Mama Makan. Evening drinks and light bites were provided at Mama Maken Bar & Terrance from 6PM to 8PM.
The bar area is incredible. There were several seating areas including the bar, a communal table, and lounge area. A pool table was available for free.
During warmer months, the terrace is open. It wasn’t open during my stay. Bummer. I was looking forward to relaxing out there in the evening.
Service in the bar area was great. I ordered a coffee and worked a bit. The server checked on me several times over the 1.5 hours.
Hyatt Regency Amsterdam Bottom Line
After two nights, my time at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam was over. I really enjoyed by stay. From the décor to the room, it was a truly great experience. The lobby décor was incredible. I loved it. Service in the restaurant could be improved, but it wasn’t enough to change my opinions about the hotel.
This is a hotel that I will return to if I ever return to Amsterdam. Now, off to the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht.
