First opened in 1928, the DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington has a long history of serving guests in Wellington, New Zealand. After some delays, I switched my reservation from the InterContinental Wellington. I was only going to be at the hotel about ten hours. Plus I had a 6:00AM flight to Sydney.

I was not disappointed by the DoubleTree Wellington.

DoubleTree Wellington King Guest Room: Review

DoubleTree Wellington Location

The hotel is located in Wellington’s Central Business District. Extremely convenient for business travelers, but also tourists. The Wellington Cable Walk is just outside the hotel. The Botanic Garden is a fifteen-minute walk and the main harbor is just down the street. The main harbor has tons of shops, restaurants and a museum.

DoubleTree Wellington Booking

I booked this very last minute. As in, I booked it in the Uber on the way to the hotel. This was because the hotel was only offering a non-refundable rate. They cyclone that delayed me leaving Auckland was headed toward Wellington. I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of going through my travel insurance.

I did a cash rate on this one. Not because it was cheap but because I don’t have any Hilton points. Technically, I could have transferred from American Express, but I find more value using those for flights. It didn’t make sense for me to try for a welcome offer on a brand I don’t frequent. $4,000 for an approximate 100,000 Hilton Honors points or $275 in cash. The straight cash rate made more sense for me.

Standard Rooms at this hotel range between 35,000 to 40,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

DoubleTree Wellington Check-In

I arrived at about 1:00PM. I asked for an early check-in and was fully expecting to not be able. Or at least have to pay an early check-in fee. To my surprise, I was able to get a room and not pay.

The Room – King Guest Room

I booked a King Guest Room, the lowest category room at the property, and that is exactly what I got. The room is small. It could not accommodate a roll away bed. Something to keep in mind if you travel with a family.

When you first walk in, the bathroom is on the left and the bed/desk area on the right.

The bed was in the center of the room. First time I got into the bed; I almost fell. It’s on wheels and can easily be moved. The pillows weren’t great. They were very flat. Probably time for the hotel to invest in some new pillows. On both sides of the bed were tables. Each was different. One was a typical bed side table while the other was more of an accent piece. Both sides of the bed had power outlets.

At the foot of the bed was a luggage rack. It seemed to be in an odd place to me.

Across from the bed was the desk. This worked well if you need to get some work done or want to sit and eat. Power outlets were on the left side.

To the right of the bed was the television and minibar. The TV was easy to connect to Chromecast. As you can see from the photo, I started watching Brooklyn 99 during my stay. The mini bar was empty, but did have tea and instant coffee. Below the cups was a mini fridge.

There was also a lone yellow chair. It was not comfortable to sit in.

The bathroom was small but functional. The sink was on the left. Counter space was limited, but two people could make it work. The shower was across from the sink. It was great. Water heated up quickly and the pressure was perfect. The toilet was in the far end of the bathroom.

While the room was small, it was functional and worked perfectly.

DoubleTree Wellington King Guest Room Bottom Line

I would have liked to spend a couple more days in Wellington. I originally planned three but ended up with just the one overnight. The area around the hotel was quirky. If I do come back to Wellington, I will be staying here. The location is fantastic. Staff was accommodating.
