British Airways operates several different routes to the United States from their hub at London-Heathrow (LHR). They fly to all the major cities including New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.

After spending some time in the lounge and enjoying a mocha, it was time to head to my flight back to the United States. While this is a similar type of plane as my London-Zurich flight, I’m sitting in a different seat.

But this time, I was in an aisle seat. While I should have napped on this eleven-hour flight, I enjoyed every minute of it watching movies.

Booking

This was booked part of a larger ticket. Since this was a cash ticket, here are the details.

There are a couple of options to book this using points and miles. One of the best is via American Airlines. You’ll need 57,500 AAdvantage miles to book this one-way saver award. Taxes are high out of the United Kingdom. AA miles are best earned via credit cards like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard®. You could also book via British Airways for 75,000 Avios. Remember British Airways have high carrier surcharges. Expect taxes and surcharges to be $400 or more. Though you can offset that some with the British Airways Visa Signature®.

Boarding

I arrived about 5 minutes before the stated boarding time. The process had already started. Things were chaotic and slow. Many passengers did not have a CDC passenger form filled out. But there also wasn’t a someone helping handing them out.

The queue was full with economy passengers. When I approached the line, I overheard an agent say business class to the right. I headed down the queue to an empty line. It wasn’t a long wait for the agent to be ready for me. She scanned by boarding pass and off I went to board the flight to Los Angeles.

I assigned myself at booking to seat 11K, a window seat in the third row. Club Europe is what British Airways calls business class. This is a large cabin with 7 rows arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration. All seats have aisle access, some seats are face forward while others are backwards. Because of this, it feels more like 14 rows.

The gallery separates the front of the business class cabin and first class cabin. Lavatories separate business class from World Traveller (Premium Economy) to the rear. This 777 wasn’t did have the more beautiful interior cabin as the 787 did. Actually it looked rather boring.

The seat itself is pretty standard. Even sitting up it was pretty comfy. There is a lot of privacy at this seat. People traveling together will like that there is a divider you can adjust to easily talk to one another. When its up, solo travelers will be fine.

The seat didn’t provide a lot of storage so you’ll need to rely on the overhead bins. Luckily on my flight there wasn’t any space issue. There was a small pull-out drawer at the foot of the seat you can store some items. You’d be able to fit an iPad here, but not a laptop.

Across from the seat was a footstool. When you convert the seat to lie-flat, the footstool becomes part of the bed. These must be up during takeoff and landing.

One annoying thing about the footstool. Because of the placements of the seats, you need to climb over your neighbor’s to get out of your seat if it’s not a direct aisle one.

IFE wasn’t working when I first arrived. It actually didn’t work for the first hour of the flight. Flight attendants had to reboot it twice for it to start working. I’m so thankful it started working. It would have been a rough eleven-hour flight. Once it did start working, it was responsive.

Awaiting at my seat was a couple of items: bedding, amenity kit and headphones.

The amenity kit is from The White Company. The bag itself is boring and not something I would reuse. There were several items inside. Socks, eye mask, toothbrush and toothpaste, lip balm, lotion, pulse point, pen and shoehorn. I used the socks and eye mask. Both were great.

The headphones were in a sealed bag. I didn’t try them as I prefer my own noise cancelling headphones.

The pillow wasn’t wrapped but appeared clean. The blanket was wrapped. It was about the size of a twin comforter. It was warm. A bit too warm at times for the cabin.

Bathroom

I visited the lavatories several times throughout the flight. I always found it to be clean. It was on the small side. There really isn’t anything special about it.

Food and Drink

Two meals were provided on this flight, lunch and dinner. Snacks were also provided. Here’s a look at the menu.

Lunch service was started around an hour and a half after takeoff. Lunch options were british barbeque, braised Welsh lamb shank and vegetarian korma. I ordered the british barbeque. The starter was rainbow coleslaw. The pork was alright taste wise. The pork was tender, but the potatoes didn’t seem cooked all the way. The chicken was good. A selection of breads were also provided, but were stale and cold. Two desserts were given Eton Mess and a selection of cheeses. Eton Mess is a traditional English dessert consisting of a mixture of strawberries, meringue, and whipped cream.

I ordered a snack halfway through the flight. It was shortbread and Lindt chocolates. I also ordered a tea. The shortbread was ok. This was my first time having Lindt chocolates. Where have these been all my life? They were so good.

Dinner was served around two hours of landing. I was provided no options. According to the meal options were chicken gnocchi and grilled polenta. I ended up with the grilled polenta. The starter was a roaster cauliflower soup. It was okay. The main dish was almost inedible. The dessert was a passion fruit panna cotta. The passion fruit was amazing.

British Airways 777 Club World Bottom Line

British Airways Club World is a great way to travel for long haul flights. The seat itself offers privacy for those in window seats. Those in the aisle won’t find much privacy.

One downfall of Club World is having to step over people to get to the aisle. This is a major issue when compared to other airlines. I don’t find so much flying backwards. But climbing over people is annoying. Some people may have difficulties in doing so.

Now only if taxes and carrier surcharges were lower….
