After spending a couple of nights at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam, it was time to check out another hotel. The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is located in an old public library. The décor throughout the common areas clearly has that inspiration. The Andaz has 122 rooms over five levels.
I’m a big fan of Hyatt and this hotel confirms my decision to only stay at Hyatt hotels.
Andaz Amsterdam Prinsegracht 1 King Bed Canal View Review
Location
The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsegracht is located in the heart of the canal district. Its located near a ton of sites including the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. You can easily walk to all three.
Booking
I booked this directly with Hyatt since I was using points. The Andaz is a Category 6 hotel. With Hyatt’s recent changes, you’ll need between 21,000 to 29,000 each night.
Off-Peak | Standard | Peak |

21,000 | 25,000 | 29,000 |
Category 6 World of Hyatt Redemptions
I booked my two nights at the standard points rates.
During my stay, cash prices were pretty high at $477 each night. I’m totally open to using cash when prices are low, but this was out of my price range.
Check-In
Only five of those room are suites. For Globalist’s, upgrades will be hard to come by. I was not one of the lucky ones to get a suite upgrade. If that is important, book directly into the suite using points or use a suite upgrade award.
I booked a 1 King Bed Atrium View. The morning of arrival I noticed in the Hyatt app I was upgraded to a 1 King Bed Canal View.
I was greeted when I first walked in. Check-in was quick. I arrived about 1PM which is two hours prior to standard check-in times.
Luckily, my room was ready. I am always grateful for a successful early check-in. After a couple of minutes, I had keys in hand and escorted to the elevators.
1 King Bed Canal View The Room
My upgraded room was on the 5th floor. The top floor of the hotel. I was given room 507 at the end of the hallway. I found this to be a great location if you want it quiet. I never heard anyone during my stay.
The closet was located right next to the front door. It was large enough to accommodate a couple of pieces of luggage. But there were only a couple of hangers. If you are here for an extended stay, it might be difficult to hang your clothes.
There was also a privacy curtain. I didn’t quite understand the point of this. The track wasn’t long enough to cover the entire walkway.
A makeup table and sink were near the entrance of the room. It was stocked with soap and several towels. I loved the design and coloring. But I’m not a fan of sinks located outside of a bathroom.
The toilet room was located across from the sink. It has some quirky history related wallpaper. The toilet was kinda odd. I’m pretty sure it was broken. Sometimes it would run until you flushed it again.
The shower was located next to the toilet room. At first I thought it had a mirror finish on the outside. This would allow no one to see in while you were showering. Later on, I realized that wasn’t the case. If you are traveling with someone you aren’t comfortable showering in front of, it might be a bit awkward since the shower isn’t in a dedicated bathroom.
Moving into the large bedroom area. The bed sits on a platform with a glass headboard. It was comfortable area to relax in each evening.
The desk, mini bar and television were across from the bed.
The desk was a good size for a hotel. A lamp, phone and the Nespresso coffee maker can be found on the desk. There were several power options including two USB ports. I found he desk to be adequate for extended working.
The minibar was built into the desk similar to drawers. The minibar at Andazs are completely free. This includes the snacks and alcoholic beverages. It was stocked with two bottles of still water, two bottles of sparkling water, a coke, diet coke, apple juice and popcorn. Heineken, a Dutch beer, was also available. Each day this was restocked.
Next to a window was a yellow chair. It was a bit odd. It wasn’t very comfortable. There was also a small glass table. This space was fine for eating dinner, but I wouldn’t want to spend hours sitting here.
The highlight of the room was the wallpaper. It was a giant fish spoon that was as large as the wall. It was so odd, but honestly, I liked it. It was so quirky but fit in with the decor completely.
Natural light wasn’t limited in the canal view room. There was a nearly floor to ceiling window next to the yellow chair. You are able to open that window a bit to allow fresh air in the room. Above the sink there was also a window. You couldn’t open this one. There were controls for darkening shades for this.
If you are following me on Instagram, I mentioned I was in love when the canals. I probably took 5,000 photos. The view as amazing.
Dining
There are two main food and beverage options, Bluespoon Restaurant and Bluespoon Bar.
The Bluespoon Restaurant is open for breakfast daily and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
Since I am a Globalist, I’m entitlted to free breakfast daily in either the lounge or restaurant. Since the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsegracht doesn’t have a lounge, I ate at Bluespoon.
The restaurant is pretty small. There was only about 15 tables in the restaurant.
Breakfast was a buffet. It was huge. Hot dishes, cold cuts, fruits, yogurt galore! The scrambled eggs on the buffet was questions but the bacon was crispy and fruits were juicy. I ended up ordering an omelette for my breakfast. It didn’t take long to come out.
The staff here was much better than at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam. As an example, they remembered me on my second morning and asked if I wanted the same omelette. It was a small gesture that I greatly appreciated. I made sure to mention that when I received my survey for the hotel.
The other food and beverage option is the Bluespoon Bar located right when you first walk into the hotel. Its open during afternoons, evenings and into late nights. The menu is pretty robust. The seating area is pretty small and built for small groups.
You can also order room services, but I never did.
Amenities
Normally, I wouldn’t include décor under an amenity, but it was fantastic! Look at these pictures. The first two are from the elevators. Digital art installations were around the hotel. There was one located in the lobby (3rd image).
When you walk into the hotel, there is a small seating area for business meetings. I noticed a coffee bar fully stocked. Not sure if ever one in the hotel has access to it.
There were also these odd statues throughout the hotel. They were at least seven feet tall.
The Andaz also had an atrium. There were some major Alice in Wonderland vibes. Tons of seating options are available in a couple different areas of the atrium. The base room was view of the atrium.
Other amenities on-site include a spa and gym. I was not able visit either.
Andaz Amsterdam Prinsegracht Bottom Line
Looking back on my stays in Amsterdam, I personally preferred this hotel over the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam. While the room was smaller, service at breakfast was much better. The location for me was hard to beat. If I return to Amsterdam, this is one hotel I’ll make sure to see if they have points nights available.
I want to return to Amsterdam to visit the tulip field next year. Hopefully, I’m able to swing that.
After four nights in Amsterdam, it was on to Brussels, Belgium.
